The one question that quietly costs you money

At an ATM or a card terminal, you will sometimes be asked whether to pay in euros or in your home currency. That second option is called dynamic currency conversion, and the machine sets the rate. It is where a lot of the loss above comes from.

Choose euros (EUR)Your own bank does the exchange, usually near the real rate.
Choose home currencyThe machine picks the rate. Often 5 to 13 percent worse.

These are typical margins for Berlin, not live rates. The exact numbers move every day; the order almost never does. A bank-run ATM (Sparkasse, Volksbank, Deutsche Bank) with conversion declined is nearly always the cheapest euro cash in the city.
